Now, let's bring it into focus.

How many people who had such a problem with the piece I posted earlier actually had something to say about the subject of the piece, Steve King?

See how that works? It's not by accident.

@Are0h What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny?" "Make yourself at home?" "Marry my daughter?" You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

@Are0h Well, that makes the quote from Blazing Saddles less funny. :/

@Are0h In all seriousness, however, you make a good point. Defensiveness often comes up over this particular thing. People who've never known racism or some kind of cultural bigotry just don't get what it's like.

They'll claim you're overly sensitive, or you're 'using something from the past that doesn't apply' anymore. They won't sit and listen to exceedingly valid and appropriate thoughts and feelings- particularly when associated with facts regarding the culture or society as a whole.

Generally speaking, regardless of who it is, people want to feel like they're 'the good guys' and anything that might call that into question fires all those brain cells into full panic cognitive dissonance mode.
