The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) responded to the problems of Ukrainians with currency exchange by removing any restrictions on currency exchange based on the year of issue of banknotes. To prevent unfair speculations and misunderstandings, the NBU amended its regulations by canceling the definition of insignificant wear of banknotes and prohibiting financial institutions from refusing to exchange currency to customers if the counter or detector at the cash desk confirms the authenticity of the banknotes. The NBU will also impose substantial fines of up to UAH 400,000 for banks (with plans to increase this figure) and fines of up to 5% of equity for non-banks to punish unscrupulous currency exchangers and banks.
