UNESCO mission initiates an assessment of damage to cultural heritage in Chernihiv region caused by Russian troops

On Sunday, October 30, a mission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) arrived in Chernihiv to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused to the city's cultural heritage sites as a result of Russian missile attacks.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, representatives of the UNESCO mission will work in Chernihiv this week. During this time, it is planned to collect data on the damaged sites, including the Piatnytska Church, St. Anthony's Caves, Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko, and others, the ministry said. "After collecting the relevant documentation and information, a reconstruction plan for these facilities will be prepared," the statement said.

The territory of the site was inscribed on the Tentative List of the World Heritage of Ukraine in 1989 under the name "Historical Center of Chernihiv, IX–XIII centuries".

Recall: On August 19, Russia shelled the historic center of Chernihiv. A missile strike destroyed the Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko and damaged the nationally significant architectural monument – the Piatnytska Church.
