Honestly while there are plenty reasons to be concerned with what #Threads might do the biggest immediate concern for me personally is just if they are going to spam ads at me by having bot accounts that push spam to me in my mentions.... that would be a nightmare!
@freemo What if they just insert ads in user's toot? Nobody reads eula anymore, and they can ask permits from user and send toots containing ads and trackers. Then they will be all over the place.
@skyblond that would be just as bad for me... I would likely silence them if I could get the members of the servers to agree... mass spamming is just not something I'd be ok with.
But if they do it that way then what would motivate anyone to stay on meta when they can get the same expiernce ad free by leaving and still talk to their friends on meta?
@freemo @trinsec @skyblond The usual would be extending the service with something that is somehow addictive to the users and incompatible with fediverse.
After all, we're dealing with pros here in terms of addicting users, i heard ex-facebook employees in a documentary saying "I know how it works, and i had to leave because i cannot control myself despite that." (or something to that meaning, don't remember the exact words).

Remember that there's part of the Twitter crowd lamenting about having to choose a server? Oh oh oh, so difficult.
Chances are they probably have Instagram. Hey, we can join this stupid Fediverse! And we don't have to choose a server! HAH THAT WILL TEACH THEM! (Let's ignore the fact that Instagram is basically 'their server' and in a way they did choose.)
There are always people too stupid to poop. But they can at least join the Fediverse and chances are they are already so used to ads... I mean, there are still people on Facebook, no?
@trinsec @freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @skyblond Pretty sure Meta is trying to provide additional value as well that justifies dealing with the ads. Towards this end, they're attracting big tentpole accounts, will have customized algorithmic feeds that few masto servers offer, and, tbqh, they'll probably end up raising the bar on UI intuitiveness for the whole Fediverse with time.
@LouisIngenthron @trinsec @freemo @skyblond ...until they decide it's time to stop users from opting out of stuff, then it's hell ui o'clock.
@admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @freemo @skyblond Right, but that'll take years, long after they've captured the user base they want to squeeze.
@LouisIngenthron @trinsec @freemo @skyblond Exactly why i'm so divided on the defederation question. Wrong in free federation principle to defederate, but it is clear what is to come. Only the details are a mystery yet.
@admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @freemo @skyblond I'm pretty confident Meta will defederate themselves soon enough to make that a moot point.
@LouisIngenthron @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond
I suspect they will federate on a whitelist principal. The instance admins who agreed to the NDA and entered the discussion are probably the ones they will whitelist. They are too paranoid about moderation to freely federate I suspect.
@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond That's plausible too. But it really depends on how the scales fall in the long run. If they run more risk of users leaving to greener pastures, they'll defederate entirely and have their walled garden. If they can exploit the free content from the fediverse for profit without losing customers, they'll stay federated.
Their biggest disadvantage is their size. If masto instances can keep light on their feet, and ahead of Meta on features, they can lure the users away. If not, Meta will likely soon dominate (at least their corner of) the fediverse.
Keep in mind they could always federate and just turn off user migration... For them that might be the best of both worlds... For now they are claiming they will allow migration.
@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond That's a good point, but users will always have the option of a hard/clean migration.
@LouisIngenthron @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond
True, another play they might do is some sort of a silence-by-default thing... basically you cant see non-meta users unless you explicitly seek them out and follow them.
@freemo @LouisIngenthron @trinsec @skyblond They already did this implicitly with the "delete account -> delete your insta". They know it's a numbers game, so some people ignoring insta itself are not a problem for them.
@LouisIngenthron @freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @skyblond I think it's risky for Meta to defederate after a long time. Their users will probably have Fediverse contacts they'd want to stay in touch with and might actually move then after defederation.
It's going to be an interesting game here.
@admitsWrongIfProven
I don't think Meta is that stupid. I suspect it'll be more like that their own software will show ads between the posts on their own servers. We wouldn't see this from here.
And even then they have to be careful since they confirmed in the news that their software will support people moving away to other instances. So, if they serve too many ads, it is bye bye users.
Speculation from my side, but hey.. everybody's still speculating now.
