The for-profit news outlets are largely ignoring Mastodon and only seem to mention Bluesky and Threads. Mastodon represents a paradigm that they are unable to pigeon-hole or navigate easily. If we want it to become more popular, we can't rely on the press to help. They like places where they can buy ads and play the only game they've ever played.
Mastodon may never be as big and influential as Twitter once was, but if it reaches a certain "critical mass" the media will be forced to acknowledge it.
