Matrix shouldn’t even to exist, and we should pour more efforts into XMPP and its clients :xmpp:

Matrix has a place. Take me for instance, my wife didn't like any XMPP clients she tried but did like Element. I now get to mesage her on Matrix instead of SMS. Do I like XMPP more myself ? Yep but I will take Matrix over SMS any day.
I need to set it up so that people on my server who forget their passwords have a way to reset it without me. So many people get new phones way more often than I do and they seem incapable of remembering the home server URL or their own credentials. Otherwise I think it's a great way to close gaps with people who are averse to less shiny interfaces. Element is well polished IMO.

xmpp had about a decade to fix stuff like file transfers and develop shiny clients. once i had many people using xmpp, everyone switched to various shitty messengers when smartphones got big. many of those now happliy use matrix on my own server. if you don't like synapse use dendrite, it is rather good now. if you don't like element, use another equally shiny client like fluffychat or whatever.

yeah most of the people I have on my server are not technically inclined, so having something that works from the user perspective as expected (element) was a huge win as far as adoption goes. I just need to smooth out some of the administrative tasks on my side and figure out a good way to handle user account management (self management) so that they can more easily set up new devices as needed without assistance.

I've heard complaints that synapse is a hog, but I don't have enough users engaging in large rooms for that to really show itself on my server.
