The best thing the US has going for it (politically) is our extremely strong tradition of free speech. As messy as it can be, being able to freely criticize the government, corporations, and other citizens is an important cornerstone and makes a huge difference compared to the alternative.
The best thing (much of) the EU has going for it is a largely functional democracy. As messy as it can be, having a democratically active citizenry makes a huge difference.

lol, lmao

@urusan i mean, look what's going on in EU politics, look at the insanely crazy construct the EU is, and then tell me that it is functional democracy.
i might as well go out on a limb here and say that the US has a better functioning democracy, precisely as there is freedom of speech - at least for now.

@MKUltralow @urusan the democracy here in germany is just for fun n giggles, there are no votes which have any influence whatsoever.
latest proof: conservative government decided to end nuclear power, greens decide to continue it despite that being anti nuclear energy is their core-concept since inception.
it's 100% bullshit elections. the only ones where you might have any influence are the county-level elections and the like, but the federal and EU government remove ever more say those regional organs have.
calling the construct we have here democracy is at best a bad joke. it might not be better in the states, but things aren't any better here.
