@publicvoit blocking mastodon.social is the exact opposite of the email problem.
@publicvoit mastodon.social is by far the largest server, it's the gmail of the fediverse.
@bonifartius And now think again whose instance might be losing when you stop federating.
Sometimes i think, that there are ideas of making mastodon.social the next closed silo... opensource as signal, but defederated with (almost) all other fediverse-Instances... then it is the nsmed "mastodon-network".
Doing bad things, so that many instances are defederating and then say "now we defederate the rest, because they don't like us" -> plan successful realized... without being a bad cop...
So far, I can follow the arguments of his decisions with respect to new users.
Locking out new users from mastodon.social is never a good idea IMHO.
Let's switch our focus to fighting spam in an efficient and effective way + promote the instance switching feature such that it's "cool" to switch to (or run) a specific instance. That would be much more supportive for the fediverse as such than this discussion.
Fighting Spam in decentralizes fediverse is as bad work to do as in email... bayesian filters... or maybe the buzzword AI/KI?
And NO... it is not a good idea to bring almost all new users to mastodon (it is not important if it's mastodon.social or other instances of mastodon)... we should all take care to change the communication in the pubilc from mastodon to the fediverse... promote all other services too.
there are so many wonderful services out there... there is NO need to take them all to mastodon. It's the same as with computers... if you use windows first, how big is the probability to change to linux? almost zero.
The same is here in fediverse.
Once landed on mastodon, people stay on mastodon.
If we really want a pluralistic fediverse, we should invite people to all other services too.
And the decision of eugen to promote only his own instance in the app is a BAD decision. It's only good for him, but for no one else.
@publicvoit @bonifartius
Or in other words:
To big to fail is TOO big!
@publicvoit nothing?
now is the crucial moment of preventing centralization. if there are other rules for servers just because they are big, the whole thing is damned to fail already.
eugen took gnu social and did EEE and now calls the whole network mastodon.
eugen made mastodon.social the "entrypoint" by choice, now his entrypoint is a spammers paradise.
joinmastodon removed e.g. qoto for whatever weird reason.
whole swaths of the fediverse are blocked by mastodon.social already because people there would hurt sensibilities.
@publicvoit s/nothing/noones
@bonifartius And the reasoning behind this is exactly what?
