this is probably no surprise if you've known me for long enough, but:
I do not believe in rules, codes of conduct or terms of service
there are a couple reasons for this:
- shit's boring
as a community leader (on occasion), I don't want to write these texts
as a community member, I don't want to read these texts
expecting anyone to read a wall of text before they participate is delusional
pseudo-legalese makes it even more insufferable
- it's extremely vulnerable
malicious participants will rules-lawyer (
https://eev.ee/blog/2016/07/22/on-a-technicality/)
malicious moderators will apply the rules too strictly and too literally
others will perceive nuanced application of the rules as favoritism
this is the exact same problem that every legal texts faces, there is no way to make it watertight against exploitation, without causing even more harm
- it's an insufficient signal of safety
some people look for a coc or tos to vibe-check a community
this is an extremely poor indicator of anything however, especially when using a prebaked text such as the contributor covenant (which was written with good intentions I'm sure)
it is, in my opinion, far more effective to signal as obviously as possible that your community is run by queers, furries, or whatever else
obviously reputation matters too, and the only way to maintain that is to be a good moderator
no amount of pseudo-legal text is going to save you if you're not upholding it
personally, if I were faced with a request to add a coc or similar, I would refuse, and I believe I have good reasons to do so
if you absolutely must, then please for the love of everything, keep it short and sweet
we don't need that kind of bullshit in fun spaces
----------------
now for the reason why I'm writing this:
here's a perfect example of why going around asking for cocs is a pointless endeavor, and a terrible response from the community leaders:
https://github.com/hyprwm/Hyprland/issues/3209OP is mistaken here because they are she's asking a known-hostile community to add a coc
this is not gonna change anything when the leaders already allow the hostility to persist, and even actively participate in it
the response from the community is plain trolling:
- from an org member: "First of all, why would I pledge to uphold any values? Seems like just inconveniencing myself.", "If you don't know how to behave without a wall of text explaining how to behave online then you shouldn't be online."
no further comment required
- the same idiot when presented with evidence of his own misbehavior: "ignoring that feces of a post, it wasn't even on github. Furthermore, if anything, those allegations are against me and fuf, both of us are members of the org. Poor arguments."
he's right on the last part, adding a coc isn't gonna change anything if the community leaders actively engage in hostile behavior
as for calling the evidence "feces", well... 🤡
I think I've made my point
the conclusion here is that you should probably stay the fuck away from the hyprland community
use it if you want, there's nothing wrong with that, after all there are too many assholes who maintain critical kernel and userspace components to keep track of, so you probably wouldn't be able to use a computer at all if that was enough to stop you
but let this be a warning that if you have problems or want to contribute, you should either give up or be prepared to deal with the hostility head-on
