#Kagi says that unless you are in the top 1% of search engine users by activity, you should be fine using their $5 for 300 searches a month. I decided to get the $10 unlimited tier so I could get a handle on how it works without worrying about running out of searches.

In just over 24 hours I have used just over 150 searches... I guess I am in the top 1% 🤣

@robby Yeah, 300 is nothing.

I wonder if it is starting to make sense to have one's own search engine?
Disk space is cheap, bandwidth has grown a lot. And if I know ahead of time what to not(!) index (porn, furries, fashion, food, ...) it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

@niclas @robby i toyed with the idea to build a small crawler to just index select sites, like programming library documentation, maybe select youtube channels via rss (or god forbid fedi users! :P) etc.

most often i don't search things i never have seen, but things i know to exist but i need more details on.

@bonifartius

Yeah... I haven't spent any time thinking about this until now, so I guess there are many aspects to this, but I think a combination of content filters and black/white domain lists are absolutely required.

Personally, I already have a problem with my own hard disk, the 2.3 million files are a bit "too unwieldy".
