Veganism is beyond silly -- one calls on ethical treatment for animals .. only from humans. But not call on ethical treatment from animals towards animals. If veganism was ethical, the foxes would stop eating chickens.
The ethical choice is to be aware of why one eats something .. where your food comes from -- to try and make a smaller imprint on this little water ball. That is something that has been lost, and perverted by corporations.
Eat local, eat seasonal, eat wild.
There is literally no difference between over hunting, over fishing, or .. mono veggie crop culture. E.g, palm oil, avocado, bananas are far more harmful, to the environment (and beyond unethical!) than your local game keeper dropping a rabbit on your doorstep. Excessive needs are what is wrong, something that veganism without any difference to the massive oink industries celebrate, and enjoy.
@amszmidt a while back i had a vegan starting a discussion about why i am not vegan. they repeated "think of the cows and calfs!" five times.
i laid down in various variants that with the traditional way we have cows converting grass to food.
putting the manure back on these meadows keeps the nitrogen as cycle and in check.
while also keeping important habitats for other species.
the alternative being we plow over meadows and drench everything in artificial fertilizers to even have the possibility to use the wide swaths of lean soils otherwise not usable for field crops.
or we try to import everything from across the globe. ruining the environment there, as you already wrote.
vegans not having a single clue about ecology is my #1 pet peeve.
@bonifartius There is traditional, and there is also what we do now .. what we do now is insane. When I grew up, my neighbour had one milk cow .. got fresh milk each day. We had chickens running around all over, geese and maybe a goat or two. Meat was not daily, it was seasonal (i.e. end of year where you would eat more meat, like beef and pork, than fowl, since this thing called winter).
Today, your milk farmer will have 100 of cows. It is as insane, asine and stupid as going vegan.
@amszmidt sure, the modern way is bad as well. guess it's what happens when a society is transformed from 80% working in agriculture to maybe 1% doing industrialized agriculture.
farmers here are still relatively sane and actually are put their cows outside to graze. it's not perfect, still could be much worse.
the traditional way was self-evidently the sustainable way. germany 1900 had a population of ~60 million and was able to feed them.
instead of using the new technology in a sane way we do crazy things with it. like flying strawberries across the planet instead of freezing (or canning) our local ones when in season.
