'Implementing a series of sustainable practices in health research could help the field to reduce its hefty carbon footprint, according to a report commissioned by health-research funder Wellcome.'

@cyrilpedia Our lab recently catalogued our biggest energy slurpers. The -80C freezers easily came out on top, 10s of kWh/day according to the data sheet. Computation came as a surprising second, and we don't have any clue what the terribly insulated 1960s building costs to keep moderately warm in winter.

My previous institute ran a "get a new -80 freezer for free if you scrap two old ones" challenge for a while. Apparently the new freezers paid for themselves within a couple years.
