Anyone have any experience or opinions on self-hosting a single user fediverse instance? I like to tinker so it sounds like it could be an interesting homelab project for a boring afternoon. It might be fun just spinning up VMs and trying out all the different projects, but I don't know what actual use I'd get out of it after that. Nerd stuff aside, having to be extra social to build up a network of follows/followers from scratch (i.e. without local or federated timelines) seems... tedious. Especially for someone who isn't naturally gregarious.

What sort of advice could I offer? I can confirm that it puts one at a disadvantage since federation is determined by who follows you. So a single user server will often struggle to federate even if you have hundreds of followers (since a multi user server will have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of collective followers)
I should also point out it is very typical for servers to auto-block single user servers since they suggest no internal moderation.

Interesting about the moderation, part of me is a little insulted by the implication that I need someone looking over my shoulder, but I understand there are other considerations like liability as well
I agree with you, but it is what it is.. The fediverse vcan be kinda ban happy and its a full time job keeping ahead of that. As a moderator I need to constantly search the fediverse to find people who are tellings others to ban us and then interject to clear the air or even email admins preemptively to work with them and ensure we dont get banned.
Once I was told "The fact that you butted into our conversation is proof you should be banned"... im just like "Are you aware of how the internet and social media works. Make your post private if you dont want me to comment on a post that is literally about me and my server"...

I mean... Even for the internet that's pretty silly. It kind of confirms my suspicion too that installing the software will be the easier part. Granted I'd only be running it for myself, it's not like 15k other people would get banned with me just because they share a domain.
