@sda correction: they are **sometimes** caught lying, not "often". Scientists arent perfect, but they certainly arent out there lying anymore than your average joe.
They probably lie less than the average Joe. When a scientist is discovered to have produced crappy science, it costs them future opportunities at being published and ultimately their career.
When an average Joe lies, their friends call them names and then buy another round of drinks and move on.
