My guess is that @alecui wrongfully assumes the center of the spectrum is the "average opinion", which is completely naive to what the left and the right means.

Basically, yea the left int he USA is a bit more to the right than the left in europe, sure. And the right in europe is far less represented. But the center is the center, and it is based on ideological not what is popular.
