“On Mastodon, admins can read your DMs” is technically true, in the same way that anyone with server access can get into the database and read database records, but there’s no interface for it.

Meanwhile, Elon can clearly read your DMs, and even shares them with the media.

Someone got on this kick once and it’s pernicious, and mostly just exists to scare people away.

With server access, admins can do a lot.

But I have way better things to do than invade someone’s privacy.

@oliphant Actually there is access to it... sorta...if one of the parties of the DM reports the DM then the admin will see it int he interface, no DB access needed.

@freemo @oliphant As I understand though, the only way this works is for the one (Or two) servers that have the DM communications? That is, @oliphant can't see my DMs unless they're with someone from their server?

@freemo @oliphant That's not the admin reading the DM, it's the admin being shown the DM - a whole other ethical situation since it's with the explicit consent of one of the people involved in the DM convo.

@Mabande

The semantics arent particularly important to me. As long as everyone understands how it works (and sounds like you do) then im good.
