ok how are “force” and “energy” have anything to do in a graph layout :neofox_sip_glare:

@xarvos some layout algorithms rely on physical models to achieve the layout. for example they treat edges as springs, place all the nodes in the middle with tiny random variations, and then simulate string elasticity so everything violently throws itself in to some kind of positioning. @freemo has a variation of that https://jeffreyfreeman.me/hyperassociative-map-explanation/ without the springiness.

@icedquinn @freemo ok they also mention springs here (i’m reading graphviz doc). things just jump in where i expect them the least :neofox_sip_glare:

@xarvos

The spring algorithm is very ineffecient and doesnt work well... You should really check out my algo, it is an improvement in every way.

@icedquinn

@freemo @icedquinn as you can see, i don’t know shit about this field so i can’t compare them anyhow :blobcatgoogly:

@xarvos @icedquinn

Fair, but if you used them youd notice the difference visually quick easily.

@freemo @xarvos I had to implement them because an AI paper I implemented called for geospatially organizing a graph by node similarity :blobcatpain:
