Why is it when people troll you about a mature discussion they always get bored when they have to deal with actual facts and have an honest conversation...

Like just admit your argument was invalid and you dont care.. save us all the time.

@freemo Bored now. Bye bye.

@freemo
An ego aspect. People refuse to believe the argument they have presented has no ground to support their position.

@Darkayne

I think that is often true... but here I think he knows he was speaking in a flippant hyperbolic way... so he must know better.

@freemo In my case, it usually means that I've gone beyond the depth of knowledge I have readily available, but I still think the other person is wrong, but I feel too lazy or exhausted to do a couple hours of research to argue with someone on social media.

I've been thinking about that, and I came up with this theory that this is a fundamental difference between faith and science
when the argument presented by the person is more like a scientific theory, and available data contradicts it, the reaction is often of interest, to adjust the theory to best integrate the data
but when the argument is more like religious dogma, that the person identifies deeply with, when faced with a contradiction that threatens that identity, it triggers an "identity protection" reaction that amounts to negation, rejection, and ultimately retreat from the conversation
please bring counterpoints so that we can refine or correct the theory :-)
I've run into this quote, that seems apropos:
"You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it’s based on a deep need to believe" -- Carl Sagan
