I believe the LG in LGBT should be changed to H. Homosexual, Bisexual, Transsexual. Why does Lesbian & Gay need to be separated? Both are homosexual. Both are gay. Gay & Homosexual are inclusive. Lesbian is exclusive to women.

@teslanaut By that logic why is the T there, L, G, and B are all sexual orientations, T isnt even a gender, it is a description ok one who is changing genders and is transient. It is completely unrelated to the other letters.

@freemo When did Transsexual become Transgender? I never heard of the latter before 2020, it was always the former. The former made sense to me because the individual actually changed whereas Transgender is like putting a flag in your profile.

@teslanaut As far as I know transsexual and transgender are often used interchangable. Transgender makes more sense however as a term since gender can be changed, but by definition sex can not.

@freemo I've been in San Francisco my whole life and Transgender was never used until now. There's even a "Transgender District" in the Tenderloin. Though it makes me wonder why that is since there's also the Castro, which is supposedly the LGBTQIAAP capitol of the world. The word Transsexual has been subsumed by Gender. Also, when did the surgery go from sexual reassignment surgery to gender affirming surgery? You say they're interchangable but it seems the former, as I said, has disappeared.

Yea, people used to use transsexual, then they realized it wasnt accurate givent he definition os sex and gender so the term was updated to be accurate.

> The word Transsexual has been subsumed by Gender.

Right cause these are different words with very different meanings.. .It was replaced with a term that is more accurate.

> Also, when did the surgery go from sexual reassignment surgery to gender affirming surgery?

Same thing, since such surgery doesnt change your sex, and only changes your gender, it is a more accurate term.

> You say they're interchangable but it seems the former, as I said, has disappeared.

Sex and gender are **not** interchangable. They may be used that way incorrectly but they mean very different things. Transsexual and Transgender often is used interchangably because one word is intended to replace the other, the other is inaccurate and not a good term to use, but strictly speaking means the same.

@freemo If a biological man identified as a woman but gets no form of surgery, changed nothing, didn't even take hormones. Would that person or should that person be affirmed as a Woman? That is transgender. Is a person who a transvestite a Transgender person?

If the same person actually went through all the surgeries & and all that, that fits more with the Transsexual definition, since they actually went through a transition.

@teslanaut

> If a biological man...

"Biological man" makes no sense here. We have sex (ones DNA) and gender (ones outward expression). Both are biological, one deals with how you "appear" and includes both the way you act, dress, as well as the way your body develops. Sex is DNA and determined by birth and is not changed by surgery.

What I suspect you mean is "A person whose sex is male"

> identified as a woman but gets no form of surgery, changed nothing, didn't even take hormones. Would that person or should that person be affirmed as a Woman?

As long as they make an attempt to speak, act, dress, or present to the general public as a woman than they would be of the female gender. However if it isnt a complete change, such as them having male genitalia while otherwise presenting as female they are called "transgender" since their gender is a mix, or transition.

> That is transgender. Is a person who a transvestite a Transgender person?

Yes a transvestite would be a subtype of transgender. Specifically a type of transgendered person who only presents as the opposite gender WRT clothing.

> If the same person actually went through all the surgeries & and all that, that fits more with the Transsexual definition

No, if they actually have a compelte set of surgery they would not be transgender anymore, at that point they are the new gender.. so they would just be "male" or "Female" gender at that point and no longer transgendered. That said many may still adopt the term.

Also no Transsexual makes no sense if they went through a full transition or not since their sex remains completely unchanged. It is their gender that changed.
