BELOW IS YOUR MESSAGES
IN 1 BIG MSG

@freeschool I agree gaming community is pretty atomized, people do largely come in just to play. There are discussions/talk in servers sometimes, despite it being pretty poorly suited for it. (About varying things, there are a few extreme right assholes.) I've played it for a long time.
There were tournaments, and i think some people arrange 1v1s sometimes? Possibly a missed chance that no tournament during covid.(1/N)
------------------------
@freeschool I haven't done tournaments, the range of skill levels varies a lot. I totally winning sometimes, partly because of health pickups and getting in control when you win... Still i am pretty weak against even better players.
Competitive feeling or feeling frustrated getting trounced are definitely something to deal with.. The game is largely dodging and hitting each other. (2/N)
------------------------
@freeschool I think Xonotic has better movement system than Quake.
The feeling of flow is in evading damage and dealing it, it'd be less if there was no opportunity for give and take there? For me negative emotions are mostly really pre-existing, i'll just vent some frustration a bit when it happens.. There are running servers where you have to beat a time, but i didn't find the appeal.(3/N)
------------------------
@freeschool About competition.. Really maybe shouldn't want to be the best as much.. Playing the game as best as we can is sort of a cultural expression, but attaching self-image/feelings to it is a bad side of that.
Possibly that RTS (like https://springrts.com/ ) or simulations like minetest can provide bigger more structured cultural expressions, without competition for the latter. And they do lots of things the real world can't. Think probably there is a place for them.(4/N)

@freeschool
But yeah, it is sitting behind a screen, and not the place we give it right now. At least for people not into books(like me tbh) the more easily enticing forms of entertainment can be too easily distracting.(5/N)
------------------------
@freeschool There is also an issue for me; real world, mastodon and games are really disjoint. Which reduces how much they can act as community.(6/N)
------------------------
@freeschool Ideally should have these more aligned. WhatsApp groups are possibly a good example, they're often in a family or neighbourhood more? Perhaps something like XMPP should be used for that, and people could launch games from that so it's closer aligned to other social relations..
And also perhaps fewer "slogfest" like games like DM or in SpringRTS there was a 8v8 all the time.(versus 1v1 to 3v3 which makes more sense) (7/7)

@freeschool
PS: The name change to Xonotic was basically forced by someone running with trademark? I think Xonotic is the "original branch", not the fork. That said, it seems long ago and unimportant.
