@unfa Hi there... Could you use filtered YouTube links so people are not tracked / harvested by default from clicking your links?
Put the original link if you want but further down please :) and the examples below show it's just about putting video ID in filtered link such as this:
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=YP8dZKYMxZ4
https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=YP8dZKYMxZ4
youtu.be/YP8dZKYMxZ4
I can totally hear these issues in what you said; about the
- aesthetics / interface / credibility
- fragility / uptime of instances
of the non-YouTube instances
and reply is
- if we were to be realistic (or just more realistic) there is no way to really run all these videos and hardware or finance ( that YouTube / Google does using questionable means) without anyway the mass natural damage (water cooling, hardware, electricity etc) not to mention making more money for them more than us and the financial part of that chain selling data
Whatever cause or life we believe in we have to preserve. Google just hammers on all this.
- 24hrs of video in every 1 hour.
(Just on google youtube) is just sick and well it was bound to come to finding our limits (our planet).
Leveraging resources for all-you-can-eat video data for corporations to feed on isn't great either...
Any bottle-necks or poor subsidizing ways always come back to us and far from sustainable.
So videos are good but reality can't do it. We mostly have realised we are running out of everything, even water for the data centres in some places!
Even the little money we get from it (banks saying 'we have no money' and price increases are defeating any increase or profit we might get...
Just too many things - totally without rage here- just clear across the board how almost one or few people went all in and came short...
none of the funny money / banks / data - can get nature back or the political weight or surveillance society ... so having a few vids yea but no way is it possible for all the politics, design in nature + high tech gear + energy deny that we basically suck the life out
of,
Megabytes-per-second upstream + then down all mostly to be disposed of... with little regard or inside what it takes (all the above lol- or simply realising it's not as easy as we think).
I have a picture of a person on a life-support machine and they are considering to take the plug out to charge their phone! Because their battery is low on their phone they don't see the 'connection' between the two... ! :)
I'm only asking directly right now you add filtered links first to alleviate people's being taken advantage of and I'll revisit this post later to checkup on it...
By not checking this or asking why Google / YouTube will never respect how they do things... they don't have to find a better way to 'make' money from us as it's their product (we are their product),
[ sympathetic pause,... ]
...
By the way the "not wanting to starve YouTube" part made me laugh out loud :)
With 8-11million or billion in profits per month I don't think you need worry or put emphasis that somehow we'll stave them.
'Starving' 'google' that s good one!
Let me know what your final planes and stance is thanks!
@freeschool I haven't had anybody complain about me posting vanilla YouTube links, and using the "filtered" sites makes it impossible to interact with the video creators by commenting etc.
I think if someone is concerned about this, they can probably modify the URL themselves, I don't see a need to do this for everyone.
Full disclosure: I am a videomaker myself and I stare at the other side of the coin here.
@unfa
One way is to wait for people to complain, another way is to influence what change you'd like to see and compound the change (for yourself and others).
So if you disagree on what you are softly pushing others to use you can change that.
Without being hard or about ultimatums, it is about where you stand and maybe some minor points (as usual) rope you in but putting both links with your preference at the beginning also does the justice of advertising better ways / software / FOSS or whatever gets you stimulated (even if it's not perfect, it's the right thing to do often).
Will reply to the other msg you sent now with neutral but straight talk about it...
@freeschool One web search revealed there's an add-on that does just this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hooktube-redirect/
@unfa
This expects people to do the work *before* the link and doesn't involve your own preferences and politics.
Whereas the alternative sorts this out in any case whatever setup someone has and say video is ok but the bad stuff isn't.
(again in addition to the usual unfiltered link you can add anywhere)
@unfa@mastodon.social @freeschool@qoto.org there's also the more general "Redirector" extension which I use, which allows you to add your own redirect patterns for whichever sites you want :nkopeek:
@freeschool I have mixed feeling about this.
I understand the privacy concerns, but I am worried about starving YouTube.
YouTube provides a very expansive service that we, the FOSS community cannot fully replace just yet with a comparable video quality (PeerTube and Odysee both look much worse), reliability (PeerTube instances can and do go down without notice all the time - I had 2 die on me previously), and content diversity (most creators are only on YT, some are on Odysee as well).
