I have solution for all of those.

It can seem massive so here me out without arguing....

Just reduce scope / implement a few things in the way I suggest below / don't go for total email package ... some points below

- Emails are whitelist only (people ONLY add people they are sure about instead of accept all incoming mail and expecting yourself to filter it)
So this could be a 2nd mail they have and build up but the exclusive / user designated email means 100% not spam and sticking to the right people which after a while becomes more solid).

- I suggest Mastodon as way people say hello to each other and then send emails via DM to whitelist them as we go along (on-the-fly 'security' or clearance for incoming). No spam other than 'block all' needed + whitelist.
- as sub option, on could have switch to accept all incoming and then switch it back to block all allowing smaller time-frame for spam which would be much less spam and switch it off again.

- not expecting 0 banks- like I said have all the different types of fish to build a better empire / mutual / caring group eventually everyone... with money and without.

Happy to hear counter points without pushing for it right now - just why not whitelist for example and why not 1mb/10mb storage to achieve at least enter it into reality,

Thanks (I don't want equiv email, I want small tech / better culture)

@freeschool > - Emails are whitelist only (people ONLY add people they are sure about instead of accept all incoming mail and expecting yourself to filter it)

Add what? Who? Whome?

@dragnucs
Answer: Adding / saving emails to a whitelist...
So the subject is about spam - but I was putting forward the idea of a whitelist (maybe I'm using it wrong but to make sure, a whitelist means accepted incoming list) of emails which means auto-blocking everything but this user-created 'whitelist' for selected known people.

Email system just allow things that match list rather than checking / using AI to see if every single email 'could be' legit.

Using less processing power / less resources with is expected here in this scenario per user just to be low-footprint and quality more than quantity...
E-mail *I think* nowadays is mostly just a key step in signing up for even more services / providers... facebook... to exploit / data harvest from day 1 etc)

Hope that makes sense... more below but its just same as above but in other words / a different variation

User builds their own list
and / or has an temporary 'accept all' button or something for incoming (a bit like routers can do) and then switching off / timer then goes back to whitelist-only emails being checked in inbox....

The aim is to save time and build list- not expect all the equivalents from Gmail type outfit or create the same Gmail with different name tomorrow

@freeschool The burden of managing an email server is not the fight about incoming spam. It is about sending emails and not being flagged or dropped by big corporate providers.

@dragnucs
Ok. Two things

1/ We would be dealing self-hosted to self-hosted (or at least starting from that - I/this group does not intend to need gmail or will have 2nd account for that - this is totally seperate and incremental in it's own loop so incoming outgoing is managed by like-minded self-hosts / same software or just not corporations and we are not intended to use it with corporations)

2 Are you saying that if people add my email to their gmail whitelist still it won't go through currently? (even if so see point 1)

So I think I answered that
- we (the like-minded and those who know Gmail type corporations will clamp down in the end) are not trying to do a catch-all and equivalent to Gmail!

Something reduced and self-implemented and at least achieving what will only start with a few users and increment using pure-whitelist (like just my Mastodon friends to start),

People will 100% keep their Gmail or whatever and transition later - this is not direct replacement but parallel.

Happy to audio chat if that helps (friendly stuff).

@dragnucs
It feels like "how is it possible for you not to understand it."
It's said many times in many ways.
What do you not get?

@freeschool What are the whitelist and block lists for? I understand to reduce spam and increase trust. But why? You are trying to explain a technology being aa subset of traditional email but not compatible with all email.

Also, how does it help reducing costs?

@dragnucs
Feels like you missed a bit, maybe not even seeing some or all of what I wrote (maybe it's the interface which only shows your reply unless you click main message and shows all replies)

So in this message I address my aims qoto.org/@freeschool/108995930

and specifically it might help to say

- I am not aiming for Gmail 1:1 copy or replacement but limited functionality to get passed some hurdles and get into entering private comms aware from corporations

- Self-hosted to self-hosted (nothing else to start)

- Whitelist or accept incoming email addresses are the main filter (everything else ignored, is used initially to just message between personal friends as most email are)

- Other existing ways and email accounts still are used but this self-hosted way increments other things mentioned before like safety / building different culture / different possibilities .

- eliminates / reduced personal comms with 3rd part and makes our own thing (which eventually we will need)

Other points about reducing costs

-It reduces costs as it doesn't need spam, only yes/on on a persons accepted list.
This is written by the owner of that email. If not on list then it rejects. Yes this not 'compatible' in your logic of thinking about Gmail replacement but aim is not that. It's more about building 'our own thing' and then after in future considering more. More self-hosted to self-hosted as that is the end-game anyway.

Aims and usage slightly different.

-It reduces costs as I would accept even 5mb / 10mb mail if it would tick some major boxes and further better comms that way or test this method of quality control without using it as a storage provider or corporate snooping device.

TL;DR
- less / no spam processing
- less storage space expected, just for better comms

Anything else?

Follow

@dragnucs So I'll be reading more about that... but you asked me a question about something I don't know... So is your suggestion in answering the aims / requirements solving those things?

@freeschool It is a selfhosted email server based on containers and easy to extend. It offers SOGo webmail, and admin panel and stuff.

@dragnucs Great thank you. I think I will have to check personally from the list of what I've already written and see if it misses anything. It still sounds like you're not sure or can't see why... but anyway good for clearing what would work and what wouldn't.

For example:
- I have to check if can filter incoming mail strictly to the list of emails add as plain text or whatever...

- How much does it take to install

- Minimum requirements

- Footprint per user (how much storage needed even with - mails)

- If storage can be increased anytime

- etc
