🇬🇧 The EU's #chatcontrol draft law presented today means fundamental rights terrorism against trust, self-determination and security on the Internet.
You can read my detailed assessment here: https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/eu-chat-control-bill-fundamental-rights-terrorism-against-trust-self-determination-and-security-on-the-internet/
@jubei @echo_pbreyer MEASURING CONSENT / UNDERSTANDING:
1. HOW TO MEASURE USER UNDERSTANDING?
2. HOW TO AVOID USERS BLINDLY ACCEPTING TERMS AND CONDITIONS?)
- People to check understanding more than computers?
- How far do we value and want to preserve understanding before 'using' something.
MY TAKE ON THE ABOVE QUESTIONS:
I think if you could measure if someone reading something then you conceive a better idea of understanding. (notice reading is a sub-part of understanding)
I don't think computers do either well (or necessarily should)... though it's possible to do sub-parts and this is why I like human interaction as it's more 100% if both text and human is involved, "double" double-checking or allowing people to ask questions rather than ultimatum or fork in road to using or not using. I think for obvious reasons many people want to use before understanding or hype, excitement, features overrule any sense of danger (especially if you don't understand what you are signing up for, hence 'signing up' to ANYTHING is now an EXPLOIT or HOOK that later people understand or pay the price of not knowing initially)
So even if there are imperfections / side-effects from human interaction overall I still hope, even in the worst case of '1 by 1 I must talk with my user' then all things level up properly rather than just getting mass without quality control and agreement somewhat.
People asking "Do you mind this?"
Users asking "Why do you do that?"
Understanding legal definitions (which even creators don't understand but eventually people will this way)
EXAMPLE: TICK BOXES
Similar to an online user ticking a box for accepting terms and conditions (without reading) there could be a way - which I remember on a few occasions some clever people trying via software (e.g. timer or scroll check) but still it's not 100% but would show 0 interest if someone clicked 'Yes' in less 10mins for 10pages of terms!!!
IDEALS ARE DIFFICULT OR UNDERSTANDING IS TIME CONSUMING / NOT ABLE TO BE ON DEMAND ALWAYS
It's getting better like sites with 'talk to a person' chat plugins or links to WEBRTC chatrooms like https://meet.jit.si/yoursoftwarename)
So I'd prefer fast access to human while maintaining privacy (this is that hard part in audio conversation perhaps and not wanting to be recorded but for understanding essential to long text contract or questions a use might have rather than ultimatum clicking 'yes I understand' or closing browser tab and going away).
SUMMARY
An extended writing but how important understanding is, is literally how long this post is also.
VERY VERY IMPORTANT and also solves the expectation in the end or downfalls of privacy etc by sorting it out in the beginning and educating at the start )not the end when people uninstall into the next software BLIND!).
