Re-reading "We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI" - semianalysis.com/p/google-we-h - this paragraph jumped out at me:

"The value of owning the ecosystem cannot be overstated. Google itself has successfully used this paradigm in its open source offerings, like Chrome and Android."

Google thinks of themselves as owning the web. Which, given how almost all other web browsers are in one sense or another Chrome/Google client-states, seems like something worth dwelling on.

@mhoye ok not owning web but effectively controlling by providing? Or some other words to show that if the big G pulls it's services... then we'd instantly be back in year 2000 where getting 2mb maybe existed! And G gave us I think 20mb then 500mb and changed the game.
What I mean is: everyone uses G showing how embedded they / it and I.T. is.... no?

@freeschool @mhoye The quote here seems to be talking less about services and more about products (Chrome, Android), where they "own" the platform.

The platform isn't everything - Android doesn't own *mobile*, but for a lot of people (and developers), Chrome *is* the web (like Internet Explorer before it).

I definitely don't claim to the details but somewhat ignorantly still think (or people seem to prove constantly) that we need the big G, so if it's apps, platforms, search... you can group it all in this kind of context I mean- which I think applies to many contexts of usage. I.E people can't do without ...or most use the G, it's got market % or 'prob' wins any stat if compared.
