Here's my analogy of people who complain about federated servers scraping their data (e.g. Threads, BlueSky, etc.)...
"I live in this great, suburban neighborhood. Much better than the city apartment complex I was in before. Everyone's really nice here - a bunch of lovely, like-minded people. But this weird guy just moved in across the road."

I desire privacy as much as the next guy, but I understand that when I post publicly to Mastodon anyone online can view that. Not just users of my instance, or federated instances, or even fediverse users in general. Everyone. And they don't have to agree with my instance's TOS to do so. Anyone can screenshot my profile page, or use a web scraper to read and store my posts. Blocking certain instances won't change that.

If you don't want to give someone the ability to see and store your data, don't post it publicly online in the first place.

There's a big difference to openweb thinking, even with a little sympathy to other thoughts or virtue signalling (almost forgetting history of capitalism), because what and why most believed Fediverse was created originally (and as instances) is a less than corporate "can never be bought, isn't a corporation etc" style thing but then you have entities with track records of opposite- how can you be for that or not more caution and opt-in only for yourself or responsible instance?
A smaller thing is now the typical invasion of space and lack of admin consent - so stands need to be made or the line pushed completely out of control.
Such big movements for it's users (like saying near-nothing or waiting until it's too late) I think is reckless based on so much of why almost everyone is here (and not there as user or not talking to those server which my account will be doing even blocked).
And those guys are not going to respect it like the "Do not track me" on browsers - it's just an optional thing for them to do if THEY choose and just a signal for us to feel better, not real effect or control. So server acting for us better is the way.
That is all political and the same time we know / see the old Capitalism reliably encroaches as much as you let it and then some!
Left unsaid / unclear is a mistake even before anything else.
