I wonder if Twitter is big enough that if it does go bust or collapse it could Eternal September a number of other online communities effectively taking everything that’s bad about Twitter elsewhere and causing a chain reaction.
There are under 400 million Twitter users and 200 million users use Twitter daily (minus bots etc…), this is small compared to Facebook’s close to 3 billion users. Twitter is in fact tiny being only the 15th largest social network. But is it big enough to cause chaos in other communities if it does disband?
I’m not writing this for drama or click bait, I simply want to know what your thoughts are. At some point, a large commercial social network will go bust and hundreds of millions if not billions of users will go looking for a new home. That’s potentially not just Eternal September but Nuclear September for other social media sites and online communities.
Thoughts?
@SaddlerFan for something Twitter’s size that’s very true. I guess Meta which is the ones that’s genuinely huge is too big to fail.
@gpowerf Oh yeah, if THAT one falls we'll have a problem. It won't be just FB, after all - it'll be Instagram, too.
@SaddlerFan @gpowerf I agree with the opinion that a Twitter clone will appear from somewhere and people will migrate. We still don't know the score with Bluesky, do we? Maybe that will be to Twitter what Signal is to WhatsApp? (Not the best comparison, but you get the gist! 🙂)
@petetaylor @gpowerf Yeah! I’ve read about BlueSky - if they manage to throw that out on time it has a chance to become the new Twitter. And hopefully not repeat some of Twitter’s worst mistakes.
@SaddlerFan @gpowerf Of course, the sensible people will come to Mastodon... 😁
@petetaylor @gpowerf That goes without saying! I’m really glad I gave this site another chance. I tried to once before but it confused me too much so I gave up. This time I read up on how to register and stayed with it - and I’m glad I did. But if BlueSky launches I’ll probably check it out, too.
@gpowerf
I dunno, I think everything that's bad about twitter also occurs on most other social media platforms. Facebook and Reddit absolutely already have awful sections of their communities, Instagram I'm not sure about but I'm sure they're somewhere
Of course, from what I hear, Mastodon's original community is experiencing hardships from the influx of twitter users, so I'm not sure
@gpowerf I think that - sooner rather than later - someone is going to come up with a social media site that is just like Twitter. All those Twitter devs and programmers have so much knowledge about the site, if only a handful of them get together and develop a Twitter-like site it could become the new home for a lot of people. And a lot of people are using more than one social media site already anyway, so they already have somewhere to go in case Twitter goes under.
