@darth @jonn_blanchard maybe I am super naive, but I think the main way that non-technical users will feel immediately at home is if they don't have to think of joining a server that's federated with a bunch of other servers.

They want to just "join Mastodon".

@gpowerf @darth it’s never going to be ideal, but as long as they eventually get to join mastodon then they’ll at least give it a try - it’s when they’re greeted with ‘registrations closed’ or a mastodon error screen that they’ll leave and, potentially, never come back

@jonn_blanchard @darth the other question is does Mastodon (or any other social network) have to accommodate everyone?

Or is it fine to simply be great for those users to who it caters to without being discriminatory?

I'm new here, but I don't think it is wrong for a social network to be great for a specific target user base.

@gpowerf @darth It depends on what you believe Mastodon can achieve and how important it is. I think sites like Twitter and Facebook have proven that they are dangerous. I want as many people off those monolith sites as possible.

@jonn_blanchard @darth totally understand that 100%. So I take it you think that the Fediverse can accommodate everyone without it becoming a "wretched hive of scum and villainy" due to the nature of it being federated?

I'm not suggesting that I know either way (I don't). I'm asking for your opinion. I'm curious.

@gpowerf @darth We either believe in the federated approach or we don't. There will be a LOT of bad players joining and bad servers too - but that's what the moderation tools were built to resolve.
