I had a LINX board meeting in Peterborough today. So I had to drive 115 miles there, and 115 miles back.
And, again, I’m finding that EV driving is awesome.
I parked in a carpark in Peterborough that has a rapid charger. The car has very nearly enough capacity to do the journey without topping up the charge. And of course I left home with a “full tank”. Topped up for ten minutes once there, whilst I was paying for parking.
Cost only slightly over 10p a mile. Far cheaper than petrol. Win.
I pay about 30p per kWh at home. And when I arrived I actually did still have more than 50% left. But I didn’t want to take a chance as I wanted to drive less-than-maximally economically on my way home, to avoid rush hour. I think the 16kWh I put in cost me around 80p a unit. So, considerably more, but still. Averaged out, mileage is very cheap, really. Plus of course I could have a more efficient home tariff.
Finally there is the awesomeness of just how much smoother and quieter EV driving is. With no reciprocating action the thing just lacks vibrations. And no combustion, power and exhaust means all you really hear is very minimal motor whine, road and wind noise. It’s notable that after a fairly long day, and two fairly long drives, I was sufficiently not shattered to cook a moderately elaborate HelloFresh.
There really is a lot to like.

I’ve been helping friends out and using their Tesla Model Y in that endeavour. The comfort factors you describe are great, this EV is a really easy drive (putting aside Tesla’s automatics, which apart from cruise ctrl I’ve totally ignored). Last run was well within a full charge range but this Thu & Fri I’m likely to need at least one recharge (Belfast to rural Donegal to Dublin & back to Belfast). Slightly more demanding but I have a few opportunities to bag a 50kW recharger after leg 1.
