@hesgen That seems unnecessarily snarky. On climate, Starmer seems to have sound policy. Why are you unimpressed?

@KimSJ Because it's a vacuous statement that reeks of English exceptionalism.

@hesgen Give the guy a break. What would you like him to have said?

Follow

@KimSJ I would like Starmer to have explained exactly what he would do, and dispensed with the world leadership nonsense. It's vacuous, and simply echoes Sunak.

@hesgen I take your point, but it is what voters want to hear. However much we hate it, that is what matters most in the next six months or so. On climate, we should perhaps judge him by his actions, not his words.

@KimSJ Is it what voters want to hear? That is not a rhetorical question. The thing about vacuous words from politicians is that they can put people off engaging with politics.

@hesgen In general, I think you’re right. In the particular case of climate action, I’m not so sure. I think people are desperate for any politicians prepared to take a lead. And UK declaring itself strongly pro-climate will have an effect, even if only a small one.

@hesgen @KimSJ

A while ago, I asked why Starmer doesn't just say what a Labour government would do, and the people who wanted those things would vote for him.

I was attacked furiously by Labour members, who said the Tories would just steal those policies.

If only they would...

@Walrus @hesgen @KimSJ
I never understand that argument. If another party 'steal' another's policies and put them into action, isn't that a good thing? Surely it's the outcome that matters, not who brings in the legislation.
I know it's idealistic, but if there was a bit more cooperation and less competition, we might be a lot better off.

@Walrus @KimSJ @Sarahw @hesgen Sarah, you can’t have common sense and agreement in the House of Commons! That’s far too democratic.

@Sarahw It’s because in our electoral system it’s essential to have ‘good ideas’ to differentiate yourself from the other party, or you don’t get to implement any of your policies. And just because the other guys see the electoral attractiveness of your policy and say they’re copying it doesn’t mean they’lll actually do it once they’re elected.
Humans will human, it seems.

@Walrus @KimSJ

In the Green Party of Englandandwales (tm), we'd be delighted to see other parties steal our policies. As long as they're implemented, we're not particularly fussed.

@hesgen But the Tories will steal policies to win votes, then not implement them. 🫤

@Walrus @hesgen @KimSJ

Well the Tories did steal some of Jeremy Corbyn's policies. They don't need Starmer Policies because they already have them.

@PamCrossland @hesgen @KimSJ

I can't think of any that the Tories stole from Corbyn, but he kept coming up with them by the dozen, rather than taking any notice of Conference's policy decisions. But then, I have no idea what the tune for "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" sounded like.

@Walrus @hesgen @KimSJ JC always followed conference policy. It's Starmer who deliberately ignores it.

Anything that also gets a 2/3 majority also gets to go in the manifesto, which the Starmerhoids also ignore.
