Would love to boost some stuff I feel is important to share but I can’t add content warnings for those who don’t want to see certain things; which I’d like to respect.
All because I can’t quote posts.
This restriction feels like DRM, something that’s easily circumvented by unscrupulous people but makes it harder to use the thing for normal users.
@thomasfuchs those who mean it usually have filters set up, so won't see your post anyway. I did this with anything mentioning birdsite.
@Wintermute_BBS Maybe for the most part, but you can’t filter out everything just with keywords.
For example, sometimes people just post an image or screenshot of something; it would be great to br able to share that too.
@thomasfuchs this is intentional. See the "Why doesn't Mastodon offer a Quote option?" paragraph here:
https://nerdschalk.com/how-to-quote-someones-post-on-mastodon/
@Wintermute_BBS Yes, and it’s terrible. Even the project leads have said that they’be changed their minds about it.
@Wintermute_BBS @thomasfuchs I guess what I don't understand is that it seems like someone could functionally implement QTs in a client, (e.g. with a screenshot of the post and a link), and with all the demand it seems like only a matter of time. It seems likely that would have all the downsides people fear but also take it out of the control of Mastodon devs. It that's true, then wouldn't it make sense for Mastodon devs to implement the least bad version of the feature instead?
