in physics, invoking infinity is equivalent to giving up - right?

@filipw To be a bit more serious, I thought there was some ongoing debate about whether the Hilbert space of the Universe has finite or infinite dimension. I believe this has at least theoretical consequences for the late time state of the universe in cosmology, namely whether it actually settles to a steady state or you see Poincaré recurrences.
