Is there any artist on Earth that isn't building upon the work of other artists, with no consent? Are AIs not based on the hard earned skills of thousand of software developers?
To be clear: I totally agree that those AIs should be trained using works authorized by creators only (or whoever they sell their rights to). But it is not a simple case of plagiarism. There is much more work involved than getting data and feed the machine.
On the other hand, there are entire social networks with legal terms that allow them to use your work to train AIs, usually implicitly. So even if the need to get creator's authorization were enforced, they would have plenty of training material anyway. And since any interesting style is mimicked by someone in some social network...
@jgg @rem It wasn't about plagiarism, nor AI developers effort either. Generating pixels from text is exciting. It needs to be done without unjustly exploiting the work of people without whom it wouldn't exist.
As users, instead of diving into the excitement of a new tech, we could stop a second and slow our adoption/fun try outs to ensure that the many issues with it are addressed. There are many arguments to do so, laid out better than I could there: https://mobile.twitter.com/wickedinsignia/status/1603221617156706305
@jgg indeed. Beauty is subjective, you'd expect to get some variation in the results, unless there was a human input in the definition of beauty...
@jgg @rem besides the bias, a little reminder that these images are also built upon the pillaging of work from artists that didn't give their consent for the output of hard earned skills to be used in the dataset to train the AIs ☺️
