But without religion, how would people justify genocidal war

Maybe we could have wars about spaces or tabs instead of "holy" land?

The justification is irrelevant.
Wars are started when someone thinks he can win something by starting it (money, political power, lands...). Or when there is such a lack of trust between the parts that any kind of conflict tends to grow, instead of shrink.

Everything else are lame excuses.
