This is a really fun journal entry about the carnival in Russia in the 1500s. Amazing costumes, really good collection of illustrations.

Does anyone know what is the deal with #artichokes and paintings from the 15th and 16th century?
@PChoate At one time artichokes were believed to be aphrodisiacs. Based on all of the little ladies adorning his costume maybe he’s hoping to get lucky at the carnival? 😂

Apparently they also made fireworks out of them. Possibly hollowed them out and filled them with gun powder?
But then I’ve seen pictures of people slapping each other in the face with artichokes.
I’m starting to think it’s a conspiracy.
@PChoate Artichokes as weapons? Come to think of it they do rather resemble hand grenades.
