I'm not surprised, considering that defacing both public, historical and religious property is now de-facto for all youth and wannabe zealots of any misguided rebellious movement that will inevitably not lead anywhere.
Unfortunately, this is yet another example why security measures need to be taken to keep important works away from public reach. Because people want to prove a point but escape the consequences.
