Mastodon is closer to true freedom of speech than other social media, because you can bitch about something a friend or family member did without them seeing it.

Plenty of disinformation and garbage too, if you like to roll with that.
It's really a trust and societal agreement system. There are those who want to do-away with the federation, though.
