I hate what's happening to Matrix. They're splitting the Matrix protocol in two (image attached), because of a new EU directive incentivizes centralized services who talk to each other more than truly decentralized federated networks.
Larger networks who wish to pretend they're totally not anti-competitive can't easily talk to federated networks, so Matrix are scrapping federation in servers with a new spec change to make it easier for them.
Oh sure, it's "optional", in the sense of the protocol is being EEE'd internally by itself.

First of all, this completely erases the advantage of federation for chat networks - scaling, as each server has to talk to every other server.
This also undermines the future of P2P matrix, because servers can't indirectly learn of events other servers posted in the same channel.

"The concept of Linearized Matrix (MSC3995) is moving forwards as a potential answer to the European Union's, Digital Markets Act. The fully-decentralised Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG) model of Matrix is well-known, yet complex to implement and thus a potential blocker to gatekeepers who are looking for an interoperable messaging protocol to link their chat service to."
Sure, let's make it easy for them.

"Crucially, while being simpler to implement, our aim is to be forward-compatible with the DAG version of Matrix, such that gatekeepers may switch over to DAG-style Matrix in the future if they so chose."
As if that will ever happen. I bet those large companies had some hidden external influence, to destroy any chance of a truly decentralized resilient p2p chat system.

TBH I'm surprised you're interested in Matrix protocol.
