@analyticus @garymarcus wait... people with interests in AI worry that we're failing to notice the ways it is failing. By why would you (and not the author of the linked article) claim that everyone needs to be interested in AI particularly at this point?
@analyticus @garymarcus Well, whenever an institution deploys poor (mildly put) technology, the technology is not the actual problem, it just is not worth it. It is the institution that wastes stakeholder resources and that should be held accountable, regardless if it's corruption or ignorance. In this case, you're not saving money by using a technology that is not fit for purpose
@mapto @garymarcus I for one, I'm also worried that too often a causal relationship is indicated by AI where only correlation (at best) is detected. But correlation isn't equal to causation.
AI is only as good as IT people put in. Than again IT people are no Sociologist nor Psychologists. How objective is AI according to our cultural values. And what about minority points of view... ? How are our total society's values incorporated well...
@analyticus @garymarcus These are valid questions. Unfortunately, too many in ML forget the world existed before them
@mapto @garymarcus In The Netherlands we already have a huge government scandal that our Ministry of Taxation refused poor single parent families subsidies based on apparent inbuilt racial qualifications with a disastrous result that children were placed in foster care where this wasn't really required if properly indicated.
