@jaztrophysicist @dsacer @gmusser I'm afraid I agree. I don't know how to fix that, but I also think that mastodon and twitter are not quite the same thing, so I'm not sure we can "fix" it...
@Ruth_Mottram @jaztrophysicist @dsacer @gmusser
In the UK, a twitter account was very strongly encouraged or practically required for the outreach/public engagement part of any funding. It was the first thing that students (who were required to do some outreach) were told to do.
That was a few years ago, is this still so, or was it a local oddity?
When I asked my students (various subjects) in Germany a few weeks ago, nobody used Twitter; Instagram is their natural habitat.
@Ruth_Mottram @StephanMatthiesen @jaztrophysicist @dsacer @gmusser @OceanIceEU like so many other things, this should be evidence-driven. It is one thing where we like to post and read personally, another thing is where the target audiences are. The answer would indicate multiple specific platforms. And clearly, mastodon is still too insignificant to be a factor, but easier to support, as more respectful for its users, including via API
