Bit off topic but... How did this post blow up?!

@bobpony Feels like big new to me. I wouldn't use a browser without a good adblock and I only know that one.

@mapto @bobpony Addblock that has adds

>Since July 2018, with version 8.2, Ghostery shows advertisements of its own to users.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostery

@otyugh @bobpony I don't see anything bad in ads per se, as long as they are not intrusive and are actually useful to me as a user. To me this is a valid model to make software sustainable.

Having said that, as the sources of your quote indicate, the feature is optional on Ghostery and even when enabled by users, it does not send your data to their servers.

@mapto @bobpony
>I don't see anything bad in ads per se

Then we disagree. Even GIEC scientists agrees that adds limitation would be one of the easiest levers to pull to make mindless consumerism lower a bit.

Adds obviously don't control people, but has a strong power of influence - especially on children and vulnerable people.

Without even talking about their use in propaganda as it was used recently by Israël on youtube.

So yeah, I don't understand why you don't have a problem with them.

Follow

@otyugh @bobpony because I've lived in a totalitarian country where ads were limited to state-sponsored ones. Anyway, I am probably more willing to discern between different types of ads than you are. To me pushing information to the public through mass media is a valid means of awareness development and discussion (for people that wouldn't bother to show interest in a topic themselves). Then there is also door to door marketing for which I also see valid uses and alternative ways to keep it ethical. Sorry for sliding too much away from the topic

@mapto @bobpony I do wonder - if one totalitarian state happened to give good working condition to their worker - if that too should be considered off the table then.

> To me pushing information to the public through mass media is a valid means of awareness

It is. It just only available but to the richest businesses, effectively stranding little local businesses.

>for people that wouldn't bother to show interest in a topic themselves

I think it'd be fair - if it was consumers doing the adds.

@mapto I still have to meet the first add that was informative or held any bargain. Do you have any personal example where a global add campaign would be of any good informative value to you ?
Do you ever see people use and share them for the better ?
Because I don't have any example in mind, so if you have, it's a big deal ! Millions of adds out there everyday !

Look, I don't want a state to "give me work conditions". I want to decide what causes I invest my time and effort in. I also don't think the ads that a multinational creates are addressing my local community better than people that know it and who advertise locally. I find collective labels as consumers or proletariat to be ignoring who we are, what each of us wants, what we actually do.

I guess explaining why we have different requirements about adblockers is the least what this conversation did.
