Makes a federated decentralized social netowrk then creates an official instance, it shits itself at scale so he disables the local and federated timelines because hey its not like the official app had them either and directs people to an "explore" feed
So people coming here get to experience a stripped down and worse version of a platform on an instance he is pointing people towards that is almost completely unmoderated.
To be clear im not saying I or most others would do better, but this proves three things
1. He needs to listen to the community more
2. Slow and steady growth is better than huge spikes if you are trying to build a community and not a silicon valley platform
3. People who came here came because they dont like twitter, stop trying to turn it into twitter

To be fair, it's not like you can currently sign up to mastodon.social at this point. You're redirected to joinmastodon.org instead.
He also did this relatively early on in the wave.
@protodrew If anything, he's done a relatively good job in this respect. The only instance that's really having issues now is his own, and assuming he doesn't restore those two timelines at some point, most of those people will probably leave for other instances over time.
Meanwhile the new people coming in *now* are all going to instances that *aren't* that instance.

Because if my predictions are correct about what's going to happen to birdsite, this wave may actually be small compared to waves to come.
