I noticed a lot of discourse on Twitter about racialized activists getting banned on major Mastodon instances. Hate to see it—it’s disappointing and not a good look. Is this a culture clash issue? Is it overblown? Any insights welcome.

@Suzyanalyst1 From what I can tell, most if not all of these people went to less recommendable instances (including certain older but smaller instances which have a reputation for doing rather arbitrary things), and while having this happen is relatively rare, it is possible to avoid this by vetting the instance before you join it. (I joined years ago and did very much put thought into the choice.)

*That being said*, it is indeed not a good look. To counter this, I think instances that do stuff like that should be called out, and conversely, instances that *don't* should be given positive attention and recommended widely.
