Pretty incredible to think that attacking your advertisers for cutting back their spending is going to cause more companies to advertise.

Remember Tesla, somewhat famously, refuses to advertise at all. According to [checks notes] Elon Musk, apparently that means Tesla is against free speech

@mmasnick He apparently terrorized some other CEOs into going for the bare minimum of advertising needed to not get another call from him, rather than no advertising at all. That will tide him over for a few more days

@RichPuchalsky @mmasnick I am honestly surprised they didn't just pull their advertising altogether and block his number in response to his call.
If I were a CEO, that is exactly what I would do to someone like Musk if he called me about such a thing.

@mathlover @mmasnick They're CEOs: they know full well that multi-billionaires are thin skinned enough to be willing to spend a billion to damage someone over a grudge. It's a lot more rational to quietly fade back
