This is what can happen when one person owns and control *our* words.

@jeffjarvis yes, centralization is bad my guy. remember this as you post from mastodon.social

@jeff
To be fair to Jeff, he just got here in October. Maybe you should give him and other new arrivals a bit of time to get comfortable before asking that they find their place? I've been here since 2019 and I'm only now thinking of migrating one of my handles to a self-hosted instance.
Besides, it's not like mastodon.social allows new signups anymore...
@jeffjarvis

@mathlover @jeffjarvis fair. just putting the thought into people's minds.

@mathlover@qoto.org @jeff@federated.fun @jeffjarvis@mastodon.social Im new, but I've dived right into running my own instance. I can see that for someone non-tech inclined that's a bit of a deep dive, but probably joining smaller instances should be encouraged.
The biggest block to that, that I have noticed, is that people dont quite understand how federation works, and because of that there is an irrational fear of "missing out on content".

@maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover the self hosting solutions are getting better at a pace like never before keep in mind. i can see a one click pleroma happening by feburary.
@maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover the bigger issue is the github effect, there is an incentive to teach people the wrong habbits because of monetary reasons, more donations means they can pay their server bills.
@jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover As long as the fine print is big enough for non-tech users to read, I think one-click pleroma installs would be great :zt_think2:
@captain_arepa @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover it really is a user education problem imo. you'll have to have those follow a random set of relays by default to make them useful.
@jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover It is culture, in the end. Normal users take for granted their services and, like you said, it's a matter on how educate them so they can take advantage of self-hosting within the constraints present in the environment (host capacity, underlying infra, etc). There's also the problem of making self-hosting appealing enough :akko_thonk:
@captain_arepa @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover these are mostly solvable using tech, you can have it prompt what types of users you want to follow and it can join topical relays for such to bootstrap the federated timeline. the underlying issue is that twitter users are addicted to dopamine and censorship and they are shitbombing our network that WE made to get away from THEM.
@jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover

>twitter users are addicted to dopamine and censorship

Nitwits don't need to get into the fediverse, they need to go to the woods and touch fucking grass :facepalm_cirno:
@captain_arepa @jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover i say double down and have them touch snow nonstop until they finally cool off and stop being so addicted to social media
@lina @maid @jeffjarvis @captain_arepa @mathlover that is in fact the current direction things are going. i personally think the fedi will thrive as people detox and see that it's okay to be normal and have moderate nuanced takes as they talk to the wider network.
@jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @captain_arepa @mathlover better yet, they will eitehr end up on a server that will defederate from 90% of the network and then realize they get zero interaction because they don't care for each other, or get bullied off the network, the funniest way out is when they get banned by the mastroondon servers, in all three cases they go back to twitter or use less social media
@lina @maid @jeffjarvis @captain_arepa @mathlover that is exactly what will happen. the normal people will disperse, the psychos will fade into obscurity as they lash out at people.
@lina @captain_arepa @jeff @jeffjarvis @maid @mathlover they're the type of people that can't survive without a phone. I bet not a single one of them can live without using a phone for a day.

@captain_arepa@moe.cachapa.xyz @jeff@federated.fun @jeffjarvis@mastodon.social @mathlover@qoto.org Yeh, its also the fear of missing out that drives average social media user to "I MUST HAVE GLOBAL MASSIVE TIMELINE OMG". I had a little bit of that, but after following a few people that seemed interesting or fun, federation kicked in and I am very content with it. If anything I feel more at home as this reminds me of using forums, except now the different forums can talk to each other. Which is an absolute god tier feature.

Now I understand the feeling of nostalgia that I always have here on fedi. I was a heavy forum-user back in the day, but then came Twitter and then Reddit and forums kinda died :akko_weary:
@captain_arepa @jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover tbqh not everyone can or wants to self host so having people who can host instances is nice
@MischievousTomato @jeff @maid @jeffjarvis @mathlover Agreed. But I think it's important to have a MORE VISIBLE plethora of options for users. It frankly annoys me that whenever I see fedi mentioned in a non-fedi context, it's alway fucking Mastodont, and then people go to any mastofag instance and never get out of the twatter circlejerk hivemind cult :uzaki_unamused:
