I would not go so far as saying the americans are more free than the Dutch.. There are areas in which americans are more free and that I would support being applied to the dutch, freedom of speech and guns, the two examples you gave, would be examples of that. But there are also ways in which the dutch are more free at least in practice (I cant think of any legal ones)... the Dutch news for example is more honest and in line with facts than american news tends to be. But I guess that is a social issue and not a legal one.
