Converting PNGs to webp

What proportion of a storage reduction are we anticipating? (Being intentionally vague about the content of the PNGs, but they're Minecraft map renders)

Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted
Google claims 45% though it ofcourse depends upon the image

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@mur2501 @Ted take one and compress it? :blobcatshrug2:

```
ffmpeg -i minecraft.png -compression_level 9 minecraft.webp
```

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@icedquinn @mur2501 ffmpeg can create webps?
And testing one or even a thousand would probably not give me a realistic representation due to the variability

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@icedquinn @mur2501 ...phrasing, ted! it's important.
Due to the variability throughout the set, I would need to do like a thousand samples at random to get a good idea.

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted @icedquinn
As WebP is a lossy compression format (though it has a lossless variant too) it should give a file size always lesser then the lossless PNG

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@mur2501 @icedquinn I thought that cwebp did lossless by default, am I super the wrong?

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted @mur2501 webp supports lossless. getting your compressor to obey that varies.

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@icedquinn @mur2501 I see. Time to start over (:

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@icedquinn @mur2501 Well, it took...like 1200 minutes, but it finished. And from my ~76GB of small images, it took me down to ~69GB (nice). Time now for me to actually go for it with the lossy and see whether I can tell the difference (beyond the size)

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted @icedquinn
That's around 11% reduction in compression ratio, very less then the 26% ratio for lossless claimed by Google

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@mur2501 @icedquinn mhh speaking of compression, what compression factor should I go for? I guess I'll start with the default, which is apparently 75...whatever that means.

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted @icedquinn
I want to see the results with the 100% factor

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@mur2501 @icedquinn 18.4GiB with the default lossy. Refreshing the environment then trying with 100% factor
Follow

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@Ted @icedquinn
68Gb compressed to 18.4??

re: Converting PNGs to webp

@mur2501 @icedquinn in the message you replied to, I was showing basically no difference with 100 factor. That small size for using the default quality factor, yes
