The problem is not really about belief here, it's about being born in a religion or community and live life with the people of same community, spending your childhood according to the religion and community.
This creates an environment where you feel and become helpless without the community.
A good example of this is of some family in some town here which played music in their wedding (music is banned in my community) and our pope expelled them from the community. Now this seems to be good from a third person perspective that you got free from the community but for the family the reality is that they would now be ignored by their neighbours, other family and probably everyone they know cause of this, so it isolates them makes them helpless. So the family had to pay some money (1/2)
