I want to get some friends and family onto the fediverse (via Blimey Social, obviously) but it takes some getting used to.

Personally, I think the different feeds are very logical and the mute/block features make it easy to ignore anything you don’t want to see.

The only problem is that people get stuck in their ways and don’t want to move away from the “safe” services. That begs the question, how did everyone start using Twitter and Facebook in the first place?

@alan
People don't choose social media based on the features, it simply depends upon are the people you like and want to interact with are on that social media.

@mur2501 I think people use different platforms depending upon their needs.

Facebook and Twitter are very different. If you want to stay in touch with friends and family you’ll join Facebook, not Twitter.

The other reason for the popularity of these platforms is that they have become popular :blobcatgoogly:
Twitter is the homeland of politicians and famous people issuing statements and is seen on all small and big news everyday. Facebook is also similar with a very huge user base and the number of this user base (as well as the integration of using Google and Facebook accounts for signing up for different services and websites) attracts the crowd.

As probability nicely says, most people will use the things which other most people use.

@mur2501 But when did we stop being curious about new platforms? Facebook and Twitter were new at some point and people took a leap of faith. Once their friends and family saw them there and heard about the shiny new place online, they all flocked there.

I wonder why the same hasn’t happened with a decentralised system as broad and as varied as the fediverse.

@alan
That's a nice question, the difference between when Facebook started in 2005 and the current year 2021 is simply that more people are on internet now (especially due to smartphones), links to Facebook and Twitter are seen everywhere (the two companies have heavily invested in making their name appear everywhere on the internet even paying news channels to cover the platforms covertly). Back in the time things were more manual, control was more on your side, now it's all just one tap away and the big tech make sure that you can't run away from them while using the internet, smartphones, etc.

@mur2501 I know they choose colours and features for their sites and apps that keep users captivated (addicted).

But given recent scandals and revelations, I don’t understand why people don’t at least have doubts about Facebook or Twitter.

@alan @mur2501 There are lot of factors to blame.

You can partly blame it on boomers not knowing how the tech works. I think Trump's blog could be super easily augmented with a federated comment section. Before Facebook, the Internet wasn't even taken that seriously, since most people didn't hang around there but IRL.

Another thing is the blockhappiness of 80% of the instances of the most popular Fediverse app. The fediverse is as ridiculously divided as the USA over political bullshit.Thanks to infighting, we get the loneliest instances in the universe complaining about no posts from the known network. There should be some old Fediverse maps arranging nodes by interactions with each other floating around that shows most large Mastodon instances at the brink, because nobody can interact with them or their users don't know that you can interact with accounts you follow.

Last but not least is baffling obscurity of the biggest concerns about Botnet. Although the Bestseller filter bubble came out in 2012 and I remember snacking on it in a university library hard a quarter of its release, I know for a fact that this is as old as social media itself. Zuckerberg was infamous for not respecting his users back then and Myspace was seen as succesor to BiBo-tier private websites back then. Twitter still contains tons of garbage. That people became widely aware of these "gay issues" is just a testamemt to how dumbed down people became concerning privacy. Most twitter feeds contain more than enough information to dox a motherfucker, because when people are coocooning, they can't shut up about themselves. That data is syphooned off by those platforms is just a bonus on top.

Just check out this hardl 4 year old Adam ruins everything skit, but digress.

Next thing is the tendency to push shizos together onto alternative platforms. Bitchute's selection looks like it does now thanks to this. Then we have people promiment twitterfags screaming obout how a single instance is a CIA plot like Logo_Daedalus and mid 2000s hackers pushing their own shit in total opposition to the fediverse like Weev. I have no idea how much the influence these plays a role for your friend's decision to not join your instance. After all we are talking about a microcosm of a microcosm here.

Last but not least alternative platforms are seen as not fit for interests that have technically nothing to do with communication. Social Media is used to hawk products. Gab, the first twitter alternative to be marketed to rightwingers was absolutely worthless for that, because Neonazis don't have any money for products and fediverse will be worthless for this, because the likes of us don't have any patience for shills. Another retarded interest brought up by Weev was dating. Why you would use a web app as game prop and measure its worth on how impressed a bar maid are by it escapes me.

Its a pure stroke of luck that garmgate people have discorevered fediverse early enough for wide adaptation without retarded controversy.

@maxmustermann @mur2501 This is clearly a matter you’ve given much thought to and have discussed before! That was a very detailed insight into some of my unanswered questions 👍🏻

@alan @mur2501 As accidental expert on such nonsense I should have. Meta is one of the best topics for causing hellthreads.

On some kinds of platform is one of the most dishonestly discussed topics. First because their admins won't admit that some of the problems they have to deal with are self made.
