linux can be easy under certain conditions, circumstances, and use cases,

but it would be great if linux advocates could stop pedalling delusions about competing with mainstream operating systems on usability and support..it's self defeating; all it does is generate disappointed newcomers.

brain calluses for bad ui and annoyances is a thing.
and programmers don't (on the whole) know what a sufficient os looks like for a video editor, graphic artist, musician, or 3d modeller.

@zens So who are these people who _do_ know what "sufficient OS" is for A/V software and explain this to the programmers of commercial desktop software: Product Managers and Business Development types at Microsoft and Apple?

@praxeology corporate structures are generally kind of terrible for designing good products, but they have a major advantage over open source:

when the UX person says it has to be done *this* way, the protrammer has to do it.

in open source, the process i’ve observed is the team will invite a UX person to do a whole heap of design work, which then gets fully ignored by the programming team because programmers don’t think desifgn is a real thing, and nobody can make them code against their will

@zens The proprietary software is just as bad. The problem isn't that everyone is dumb, it is that no one is solving your particular problem. The proprietary software establishes the international monopoly, dictates a virtual natural habitat for the user base, and then free software tries to compete with it in the market of possible monopolies. But there is no one size that fits all. There shouldn't be 10 different linux distros competing for world dominance in desktop market, there should be 10 of em per state/city, each fit for its own purpose, adhering to objectively set quality standards, offered directly to general public by local professionals under warranty. For this to happen everyone involved in the industry needs to freaking grow a spine and start establishing real businesses that provide real services, even if it means putting themselves in a risky exploitable positions, instead of exploiting their customers.
