The trick that mathematicians haven't quite figured out yet is that you can combine multiple letters into "words" and use those to name things. Then you don't need five scripts and three separate fonts just to give everything its own unique letter. #subtoot

@barubary A mathematician colleague tells a story of a student who was having trouble understanding functions. After several rounds of "this makes sense, but that doesn't", it became clear that the student didn't realize a function name could be more than one letter long.

On a related note, a pet peeve of mine is the use of a lower-case L as a variable name. I ran across one "introductory" textbook that, in the first chapter, had *five different variables* with this name, each in a different font!
